Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to question particular rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
